FAQ: Iron Sky: The Roleplaying Game
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

The shipping to my country seems expensive, is there any way we can get cheaper shipping & handling fees?

Last year, international shipping & handling fees increased quite a lot in many parts of the world. Unfortunately, there’s only a limited number of international shipping agents we can work with, but if we find at any time that prices have lowered, we’ll adjust the shipping & handling fees downwards. Chances of that happening within the 30 days the Kickstarter lasts are pretty slim, though.

When will everything be ready?

The rulebook will be ready by February 14, 2018, but obviously we already have quite a lot of material ready to send out, so you won’t have to wait until then before getting your wallpapers, Iron Sky artwork, etc. As our focus is on the main rulebook, certain accessories, supplements and stretch goals will be ready a little later, which is why we ask to allow 1 to 3 months in-between some of the products we’ll be writing or designing because of stretch goals. Also, some film-related issues might arise that might make us want to add some more pages to the rulebook, but even then you’ll have the basic rules and plenty of setting information in your possession by February 2018.

Will you be able to use everything out of the films?

We’ll be able to use most of what you see in the films. The core rulebook will be appearing on the same day as the sequel, so the film team might want us to reserve some information for a later date to avoid spoilers. Also, before we release anything, we’ll make sure that we actually do have a copyright to include any description or image that references the movies. If we’re not sure, we won’t use that description or image until we can get confirmation from all interested parties.

Why don't I get all of the print books for free when you unlock them?

Several reward tiers allow you to get either all of the unlocked print or all of the unlocked PDF books for free. Some include both PDF and print. We’ve made sure you get great value for money at every single backer level – about half of what you’ll pay at sites like DriveThruRPG once the game is being sold there. One way to do this is make sure backers have enough options available – some only want PDF’s, others prefer print, for example. If we were to get everyone all of the print books and/or accessories once they’re unlocked, we would lose so much money on production costs that we eventually wouldn’t be able to deliver at all.

Why aren’t you using an established rules system?

We thought about it. Obviously a lot of our writers have quite some experience with HERO System, for example, which is a great universal system that works really well. However, we wanted to make sure Iron Sky was accessible and attractive to newbies or narrative gamers and experienced roleplayers who like more involved rules alike. We also wanted to include the board game mechanic to create Characters and have a hit location system that used silhouettes and crosshairs. No other system seems to do all of those things, though, so we came up with one ourselves. Having this versatility also makes it easier for us to expand the Iron Sky roleplaying game, develop other settings or channel other licenses later on as well.

If I buy something in print do I get the PDF too?

Most of the pledge levels will either give you one or the other. We did this to keep the pledge levels reasonably priced. However, there are reward tiers that give you both and you can get a lot of our products as Add-Ons as well.

Can I swap a product for something I can get in another tier?

We’ve provided quite a lot of options for you, so you hopefully won’t need to swap. If you really want a product that belongs to another tier, either get that tier as well or get the product as an Add-On.

Why aren’t you divulging how many pages the rulebook will have?

Because we can’t know for sure yet. We have enough written to know the rulebook will have at least 256 pages, but, because of obvious reasons, the film team hasn’t told us everything there is to know about the Iron Sky Universe yet. They’re developing multiple projects at once and some projects may still evolve as more budget becomes available. The amount of canon fluff we can include depends partly on the new Iron Sky projects the film team can launch, so we’re keeping dozens of pages ‘open’ until we receive more information on what we’ll be able to use and what not. Some new material will be in the supplements, but we’d like to include quite a lot in the main rulebook already, so we need some flexibility to do that. We won’t add more than 100 pages, though, and we also won’t increase the prices or make the backer reward tiers more expensive.

Are you really working with the film team?

Absolutely, and they’ve been great! They’re giving us a lot of leeway, but also closely guarding the look and feel of the game. It’s been a blessing to get feedback from the likes of producer Tero, director Timo, PR consultant Anniina and designer Tuomas, and we hopefully will be working together for years to come.

Asked at Gen Con: Will there be space combat in the rulebook?

Of course there will! We’ll have fast fighter-style combat, WITH the same silhouette system. Each vehicle will get its own silhouette so you can see exactly where you hit and there’ll be double-barreled crosshairs and similar specific crosshairs for certain types of guns. If you’re playing the basic game, you can just stick to one generals silhouette, though. There will also be crew-based combat for bigger vehicles, where each Player Character is assigned a specific post, much like you’d see in ‘Star Trek’.

Asked at Gen Con: Will the Moonbase get its own silhouette?

OF COURSE it will!

Asked at Gen Con: Will the characters from the movie appear in the rulebook?

Yes, ALL of the major characters will get NPC writeups for both the Basic and Advanced versions of the game and we’ll add some pregenerated characters as well.

I'm only paying slightly more than retailers are - is that right? It seems fairly cheap.

That’s because you’re only considering Kickstarter prices, not the actual prices you’ll pay once the Kickstarter’s finished. When a project is being Kickstarted, creators can keep their products a lot cheaper than they’ll be in the shops because we know exactly how much of every product is being ordered. When you don’t know, you tend to print or produce too many copies, potentially losing money. Of course, even when Kickstarting, you print more copies and sell whatever hasn’t been backed through distributors and retailers, but Kickstart gives you a far better idea of how much in demand your product is. Retailers have far more overhead costs: they need to pay rent, they have to pay their employees, etc. We can prodive them copies of ‘Iron Sky’ and its accessories cheaper than we can provide them to backers, but they have to make whatever they sell more expensive than you’ll see on Kickstarter, which makes total sense. Our core rulebook, ‘Iron Sky: The Roleplaying Game’, costs 40 euro if you only get a single print copy with no accessories through Kickstarter. Retailers will pay about 25 euro and once they start selling it, the core rulebook will cost you anything between roughly 60 and 80 euro.

The Kickstarter's almost finished, do I still get the chance to include some add-ons?

Yes, you will! A few days after the Kickstarter closes, you’ll receive survey powered by Backerkit. It’ll give you the chance to include add-ons and more!

Last updated: September 14, 2017 10:51

Is anything you promised subject to change?

Other than what the film team decides, no. We’ll be able to use all images the film company has the copyright to. Obviously, we won’t use any other images than those and the ones we create ourselves. Prior to publishing, we’ll get our experts to review the text and design, just in case we missed something. For example, an overeager artist may draw Mickey Mouse on a cover a character in the game is reading, so it would be their job to tell the artist to use a different illustration.

Iron Sky is a Finnish film, should we worry about spelling mistakes and typos?

No, WE should worry about spelling mistakes and typos! While running this Kickstarter, we didn’t always have time to do a full edit (I personally sent out a few replies to comments with typos in them, but Kickstarter apparently doesn’t allow you to edit your text afterwards and my mobile phone didn’t give me a good overview of everything I had written), but we’ll have professionals edit and proofread the entire text before we release anything.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
